Contrast and Compare

A dark, womb-like bedroom is balanced by a fresh, wake-me-up bathroom in an old terraced house in Edinburgh. When Paul Douglas bought his in June 1999, the last thing on his mind was convention.

"Making the walls light would have been the obvious thing," he observes, "but me being me I did the opposite. I wanted it to be like a sanctuary, where I could close the door on everything else and feel cocooned."
